Automatic Identification System

Vessels fitted with AIS send and receive information about themselves such as name-size-destination-status
cargo etc, much in the same way as an aircraft transponder sends information to air traffic control. A number
of dedicated websites have been set up that allows AIS information to be displayed on a PC anywhere
